Blue Jays Squeak Past Rays

Although I didn’t catch the game, there are some highlights I can share from Blue Jays 5-4 victory over the Rays thanks to the box score and what I’ve read online.

  • Brett Lawrie smacked his first homerun of the spring – although if the wind wasn’t blowing straight out, it probably would have been a routine, deep fly ball.
  • Anthony Gose went 2 for 4 at the plate and had a stolen base – his second.  Then, he was promptly caught stealing third – his first caught stealing.
  • In a position battle for the second base job, Emilio Bonifacio and Maicer Izturis aren’t helping themselves.  Bonifacio committed two throwing errors (3 total this spring) and Izturis one (his second of the spring).  Let’s hope it’s nothing more than rust.
  • Mark Buehrle struggle with control for his second straight start – still absolutely nothing to worry about this early.
  • Darren Oliver did his thing, pitching a 1-2-3 inning.
  • Dave Bush picked up the win in another impressive outing – great depth pick up.

If you’re sitting around and relaxing tomorrow afternoon, check out the Jays vs. Phillies @ 1pm on Sportsnet.  Also the World Baseball Classic official started today, although Canada won’t be until March 8th vs. Italy.

I think they’ll improve and they’re just shaking out cobwebs. We’ll know how they look the last last of March and make judgements then.

I think that the Blue Jays will have one of the best starting rotations in the whole league this season. They have the opportunity to have three aces on their staff with R.A. Dickey, Mark Buehrle, and Josh Johnson! Most teams are lucky to have just one ace.

If all stay healthy, the Jays rotations should be one of the best in the bigs. I really like Johnson in a contract year and Morrow, if healthy, could very well be the best on this club this season.

The defence will straighten itself out. Izturis is decent and as for Bonifacio, he hasn’t played second in who knows how long. You have to exspect and adjustment period.

Bonifacio played 15 games (14 starts) at 2B last season with the Marlins out of 66 games played (64 starts). At 2B, he posted a .952 fielding %. By comparison, Kelly Johnson had a .982 fielding % last year (although I bet Bonifacio gets to more balls with his range) and Maicer Izturis had a 1.000 fielding % in 29 games (20 starts) at 2B with the Angels last season.

I’d rather see Bonifacio start at 2B because he’s a better offensive player. Then with a late game lead you can bring in Izturis for defence and either sit Bonifacio or move him around to keep his speed in the game. Remember, we also have Rajai Davis coming off the bench as a late game runner.
